A vigil by the Democratic Kurdish Community in Switzerland has been taking place in front of the UN headquarters in Geneva since 25 January 2021. Every Wednesday, activists stage a protest in front of the United Nations building to demand the release of Kurdish people’s leader Abdullah Öcalan. The action is carried out as part of the 'Dem dema azadiye' [Time for Freedom] campaign and directed against the isolation of the Kurdish leader on the Turkish prison island of Imrali, the Turkish occupation attacks on Kurdistan, the massacres committed in Kurdish territories and the silence of the UN.
During this week's demonstration, which is held at a tent set up in Nations Square where the UN Office is located, activists observed a moment of silence in memory of those martyred in the attacks of the occupying Turkish state and allied SNA (Syrian National Army) gangs.
Ramazan Kızılkurt made a speech on behalf of the Geneva Action Committee and saluted the ongoing resistance in Rojava. Highlighting their demand for an end to the isolation of Abdullah Öcalan, Kızılkurt condemned the silence of the UN against the attacks of the Turkish state and the SNA gangs recruited from ISIS.
Kızılkurt called on political parties and organisations in the four parts of Kurdistan to ‘listen to the voice of the people and unite’ against attacks.
Veysel Kuşkanadı read the press statement on behalf of the ‘Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan, a Political Solution to the Kurdish Question’ action committee.
Stating that a new era has begun in Syria with the overthrow of the Baath regime, Veysel Kuşkanadı said that the Turkish state, taking advantage of this, carried out invasion attacks against the autonomous areas in North-East Syria, and now plans to attack Kobanê, the symbol of the struggle against ISIS.
“The spirit of resistance in Kobanê will help protect the peoples of the region and the world from the threat of ISIS and its supporters. Kobanê is the symbol of the rise of universal values and at the same time plays a leading role in building a democratic world for humanity,” he stated.
Kuşkanadı pointed out that Öcalan has been seeking for an honourable peace in Kurdistan and the entire Middle East, even under heavy isolation conditions for 26 years, noting that the only solution for the peoples in the Middle East is to achieve lasting peace.
“The key to peace is in İmralı. The day Leader Öcalan’s paradigm is realised, a lasting peace will be achieved in the Middle East,” he added.
