Up to 7.5 years in prison has been asked for Head of Diyarbakır Bar Association, Tahir Elçi, who was detained and questioned last week on grounds of "spreading propaganda for a terrorist organisation" after he said on a TV program that; "PKK is an armed political movement that has political demands and a remarkable support behind it. PKK is not a terrorist organization".

Elçi was later released on conditions of supervision after giving his statement at Bakırköy Courthouse.

Bakırköy Public Prosecutor’s Office has finalized the indictment against Elçi and sent it to Bakırköy 2nd High Criminal Court which will make a decision of either approval or rejection within 15 days.

Insisting on the description of PKK as a "terrorist organisation", the indictment says; "A lawyer is supposed to know what constitutes a crime and what doesn't, and consider the influence of his/her remarks on the society in respect the corporation he/she is affiliated to".

Bakırköy Public Prosecutor demanded from 1.5 to 7.5 years in jail for Elçi on grounds of "spreading propaganda through media".
