UN: 270,00 Syrian people displaced in two weeks

Record displacement due to fighting in south western region of Dara.

Mohammad Hawari, UNHCR's Jordan spokesman, confirmed that “our latest update shows the figure of displaced across southern Syria has exceeded 270,000 people.”

Hawari was referring to the latest UN figure of displaced people in south western Syria as a result of the two week escalation in fighting in the border region between Syria, Israel and Jordan.

The UN had warned on Sunday that it believed some 160,000 Syrians had fled from south western Syria creating a major humanitarian crisis.

Both Jordan and Israel have closed their borders to Syrian refugees, but are transferring aid into the area.

On the south west of the country, operations are carried out while negotiations between Russia and the armed groups are being carried out.

The Syrian regime forces took control of four districts and a city near the border with Jordan on Sunday.

The Syrian army launched a large operation on June 19th in the Dara region with Russian air support. The city of Dara is currently divided with part of it under regime forces control and part under armed groups control.

At the beginning of the operation, only 30 percent of the Dara province was under the control of the regime.

According to the Observatory now the regime controls around 60 percent of the area.

The Dara province has a border with the Golan Heights occupied by Jordan and Israel.
