Twenty six years prison sentence in Karlýova KCK case

The fifth trial of the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK) Karlýova (Bingöl) case was held at Diyarbakýr 7th High Criminal Court on Monday.  

Karlýova mayor Ferit Çelik, City Council Member Ahmet Demirbaþ, BDP (Peace and Democracy Party) provincial chair Abdullah Solmaz have been sentenced to a total of 26 years and three months in prison for allegedly "aiding and abetting the PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party)".

The court board passed eight years and nine months prison sentence on each of three Kurdish politicians who were arrested following police raids in a number of addresses in the province of Bingöl and its district Karlýova in April.

On the other hand, KCK operations continue to expand across the country as a number of houses as well as the BDP office and municipality have been raided by police in the province of Dersim on Tuesday morning. Many people have been taken into custody so far, among them being executives of the BDP, HDK (People's Democratic Congress) and the municipality. Police search continues in the raided addresses.

The most recent KCK operation in Batman, Mardin and Siirt ended up with the detention of 87 people on 8 December. The expansive operation targeted the BDP and its municipalities as well as non-governmental organizations.

24 out of 31 people who were taken into custody in the scope of the mentioned operation in Batman have been arrested on Monday. Among those arrested are BDP Batman provincial co-chairs, Batman Deputy Mayor,a member of the BDP Party Council and Batman branch chairs of KURDÎ-DER and MEYA-DER.
