Turkish Constitutional Court rejects Demirtaş’s appeal

Turkish Constitutional Court has rejected the appeal of HDP Co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş against unconstitutional arrest.

After the imprisonment of Co-chairs Selahattin Demirtaş, Figen Yüksekdağ and other deputies in November of 2016, Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) had appealed with the Constitutional Court that the arrests were unconstitutional.

The court has rejected the appeal on Thursday.

The Constitutional Court had recently rejected HDP MP Gülser Yıldırım’s appeal, unlike the Balbay and Haberal verdicts in the past, on grounds that “the long term arrest limit had not been reached” and “the arrest does not constitute obstruction of law making activity”.
