Teslim Töre's son: My father always wanted to return to Turkey

The remains of Teslim Töre, one of the leading members of the Turkish left in the '60s, will be brought to Turkey.

Töre passed away on Sunday, after a battle with cancer. He had lived in exile since 2003 and was in Bern to be treated for cancer.

He was one of the main figures of the 1968 generation, one of the leaders of the revolutionary movement and the People's Liberation Army of Turkey (THKO).

Speaking to ANF Töre's son, Hasan, who lives in Switzerland, said that he would take the remains of his father to Turkey. "Our request is to bury my father in Ankara Karşıyaka Cemetery where his comrade Deniz Gezmiş is buried or in Karacaahmet Cemetery where Sinan Cemgil is buried."

Hasan Töre said: "My father always wanted to go back to his country and die there. His eyes and heart have always turned towards his country. He even stayed in Greece for a while last summer, because he said that way he would be close to his country. The territory of the country where he began to struggle for him was very meaningful and valuable. Ever since the day he was exiled, he had always said that he would return to his country."

Hasan Töre added: “My father devoted his life to the struggle for revolution, so he lived prison, torture and exile, but he never complained or regretted what he did, not for one minute. He never lost hope that the world he dreamed of would be built one day, he lived with hope, and with hope he is going to eternity. For him, those who resisted were more valuable than anything."

Reminding that his father created opportunities out of nothing, Hasan Töre said: "He kept his struggle in front of everything. My father raised his 8 children as if he were raising his comrades. For him, every child was, above all, his comrade. But for him, the peoples he was fighting for were more valuable and important than anything else."

Teslim Töre's family and comrades will receive condolences at the Democratic Kurdish Community Center in Bern on Monday and Tuesday.

Tomorrow, 26 November, a ceremony will be held in Bern at 12.30 pm in Bremgarten Cemetery, to bid farewell to Teslim Töre whose remains should then be sent to Turkey.
