Swiss youth in front of the UN: “Take action!”

A group of young people from Switzerland issued a statement in front of the UN to draw attention to the hunger strikes and said, “Everybody must take action before it’s too late.”

International support continues to pour in for the hunger strike resistance held in various locations in prisons in Turkey and in European cities, launched by Leyla Guven to break the absolute isolation imposed upon Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Ocalan.

A group of young people from Geneva, Switzerland gathered in front of the United Nations (UN) offices in the city to draw attention to the hunger strikes and call on the international public for awareness.

“WE ARE HERE TO MAKE THE RESISTANCE VISIBLE”

Mounir spoke in the name of the group and said, “We are here to show solidarity with our friends who are on a hunger strike to break the isolation imposed upon Ocalan and to make their struggle visible.”

Mounir pointed out that Ocalan has been under isolation in Imrali for 20 years and said: “And since 2015, Ocalan has been held under an absolute isolation with all his rights stripped away. Against this injustice, to break the isolation, HDP MP Leyla Guven and hundreds of prisoners launched hunger strikes in several centers, and they continue as they cross the critical threshold. This hunger strike Leyla Guven started has now reached an international level. There are so many people around the world on hunger strikes with the same demand. There is an unacceptable silence from the international arena still. To break this silence, all must take action.”

“SILENCE IS UNACCEPTABLE”

Mounir said: “We as Swiss youth would like to remind everyone of the importance of solidarity with hunger strikers, and salute the struggle of comrades in Turkey’s prisons who chose death to keep their comrades alive and to break the isolation.” Mounir said Erdogan and his government have been waging a ruthless war to destroy the Kurdish people since 2015 and stressed that the silence of the international public is unacceptable.

“SOLIDARITY MUST GROW BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE”

“We as Swiss youth consider it a scandal that there is silence on the Turkish state as they continue the policies of massacres and genocide. We believe action must be taken everywhere, using all options. We demand that all political prisoners in Turkey be released. Before it’s too late, solidarity with the hunger strikes must grow.”

Mounir also protested the Geneva Canton officials not allowing Mehmet Ali Kocak, who has been on a hunger strike in Geneva Kurdish Social Center for 43 days, to continue his protest in front of the UN and callled on the authorities to renounce the approach.

The group of young Swiss people chanted “Long live the prison resistance” and left the UN after the statement was done.
