Under the slogan "Freedom of Abdullah Öcalan is the guarantee for peace, stability and solution", a signature campaign has been started by intellectuals from Southern Kurdistan. The campaign is mainly addressed to the UN and the EU.
A group of intellectuals, journalists, political activists and lawyers have started a signature campaign for the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan. For two weeks, under the motto "Abdullah Öcalan's freedom is the guarantee for peace, stability and solution", signatures for an open letter to the UN Secretary General, the European Parliament and the consulates of all countries in Southern Kurdistan will be collected online.
In the open letter, Öcalan is called a key figure for a political solution of the Kurdish question and peace in the Middle East. As long as Öcalan is in prison, there can be neither a solution nor peace and prosperity in the region, it points out.
As part of a campaign for the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan, which started in September 2012, more than ten million signatures have been collected worldwide and handed over to the Council of Europe in 2015. In a campaign conducted between July 2005 and May 2006 under the motto "Öcalan represents my political will", approximately 3,250,000 signatures were collected. In Great Britain, the trade union-led campaign "Freedom for Öcalan" is currently underway.
