When the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) launched an operation to liberate Raqqa from ISIS occupation a year ago, many powers were after taking the city under their control. Located on the shore of the Euphrates River, Raqqa is known as the city of Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid.
With the launch of the campaign for Raqqa, the Turkish state offered its army to the US in order to have a say on the city. Turkey was seeking to occupy Raqqa and obstruct the democratic project launched in Northern Syria and Rojava.
The democratic system established in Rojava bases on the democratization of Syria. Turkey and allied mercenaries target this project because it doesn’t comply with Turkey’s interests in the region.
On 6 June 2017, SDF officially announced the launch of operation to liberate Raqqa, frustrating the dreams of the powers that wanted to occupy Raqqa and giving hope to the Raqqan people to be freed from ISIS darkness.
Raqqa was liberated 4 months after the launch of the campaign. The city became a symbol of co-existence after its liberation which also marked the beginning of the end for ISIS.
