Puerto Rico protests continue

The secretary of Justice, Wanda Vázquez Garced, clarified that she has no interest in becoming the Governor of Puerto Rico.

As demonstrations continue in Puerto Rico, after the resignation of former governor Rosselló, the candidate to the post, Wanda Vázquez Garced said in a Twitter: "I repeat, I have no interest in occupying the position of Governor. It is a Constitutional opinion. I hope that the Governor identifies and submits a candidate for the position of Secretary of State before August 2 and I have told him so."

Garced added: "I reiterate, I have no interest in occupying the position of Governor. It is a Constitutional opinion. I hope that the Governor identifies and submits a candidate for the position of Secretary of State before 2 August and I have told him so."

Shortly after Rosselló Nevares announced his resignation last Wednesday, Vázquez Garced issued a press release in which, in English and Spanish, she said that “when his resignation [Governor Rosselló's] becomes effective, if necessary, I will assume the historical entrustment imposed by the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the applicable laws ”.

The resignation of Rosselló Nevares will be effective this 2 August, and he himself had advanced that the position would be passing to the Secretary of Justice in the absence of a Secretary of State.

The possibility that Vázquez Garced may become new governor has restarted the fires of outrage of the protesters around the island, who consider that her coming to power would be a continuation of the current situation under the mandate of Rosselló Nevares.

New demonstrations have been called in the capital, San Juan.
