Prof. Paech: Abdullah Öcalan's safety is a vital issue

Prof. Norman Paech, an expert on international law and politics, said that the life safety of Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan is a vital issue. He added, "If something happens to Abdullah Öcalan, the region will slide into disorder.”

The aggravated isolation on Imrali has once again become one of the main agendas of the Kurds following the allegations on the health and safety of Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan.

One of the leading international law and politics experts not only in Germany but also in Europe, Prof. Norman Paech spoke to the ANF. Paech said that a delegation should urgently go to İmralı. "It seems that only the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) in Europe criticizes and warns the Erdogan regime," he said.

A CENTRAL FIGURE IN MIDDLE EAST

"Abdullah Ocalan is a central figure in the region. His health and safety cannot even be compromised because if something happens to him, the region will slide into disorder. Right now, the isolation on him must be lifted and his ideas must reach the public immediately.”

"Keeping such a prominent figure in prison for a period of 22 years is already a crime against humanity. In addition, disconnecting him from the world and torturing him under aggravated isolation makes this crime even heavier."

ATTACKS AGAINST HDP

Prof. Norman Paech continued, "The increasing attacks against the People’s Democratic Party (HDP) which represents an important force of the opposition, indicate Erdogan's inability and desperation." Professor Paech also harshly criticized the German government and the EU, which have remained silent on the increasing attacks and violations by the Erdogan government.

Prof. Paech pointed out that the norms in the European continent concerning human rights, democracy and freedom, which have been formed for centuries, have also been damaged by the silence displayed against the Turkish state.

PEACE CULTURE IN EUROPE

One of the leading figures of the struggle against foreign interventions led by global powers, Prof. Paech has contributed to the formation of peace culture in the west since the last quarter of the 20th century. Born in 1938 in Bremerhaven, Germany, Prof. Paech studied law and political science at the universities of Tübingen, München and Paris.

He was a professor at Hamburg University Faculty of Law between 1975-1982. Paech taught politics and economics at the same university from 1982 to 2003. Prof. Paech served as the Left Party's foreign affairs spokesperson from 2005 to 2009.
