Şakran is one of the prisons were adequate medical treatment was not given as defined by international standards and the Istanbul Protocol.

A few days before being taken to hospital, Hatice Calıhan had told ANF that the prison administration was giving them eggs, boiled potatoes and food instead of liquid foods. A total of 30 prisoners in Şakran ended the hunger strike, but only two people were taken to hospital, Calıhan said. “That's why - she added - many of our friends are at risk of stomach bleeding.”

Two days in emergency

Zeynep Calıhan, the mother of Hatice and one of the mothers who joined the resistance in front of Gebze Prison, was told by her daughter about the two days she and the other prisoners spent in hospital. Zeynep said her daughter had lost a lot of weight, but “her morale is high. She had very cold hands, but she showed determination.” Zeynep Calıhan added that she would hold the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Health responsible, should something happen to her daughter of the other prisoners.
