Prisoner on hunger strike for over two months hospitalized

Sick prisoner Kemal Ozelmali, who has been on a hunger strike for over 2 months in Adana, lost consciousness on December 7 and was hospitalized.

Sick prisoner Kemal Ozelmali was held in the Adana Kurkculer Type F Prison despite a report that said he is not fit for imprisonment.

Kemal Ozelmali has Wernicke Korsakoff syndrome, and has been on a hunger strike since September 27 demanding his release.

Harun Kaya, held in the same prison, said Ozelmali got worse on the 72nd day of his hunger strike and he has lost consciousness.

Kaya said Ozelmali was taken to the Adana City Hospital and has been receiving treatment there.

Kaya gave the following informaiton: “On December 5, Wednesday our friend Kemal stopped drinking water. On December 7, Friday, the 72nd day of his hunger strike, he lost consciousness. He was hospitalized. They intervened because he lost consciousness. They put him on an IV. He is OK now, he can even speak. He was seen by a committee but there is no hospital report yet. The prosecutor can’t approve or reject because there is no hospital report. We are waiting for Kemal to be transferred to the Forensic Medicine Institution. He is not well, and should be released at once. We are calling on the public to support Kemal.”

“THEY ARE TRYING TO BREAK MY WILL”

During their last visit on December 3, Ozelmali had told his tutelar Ramazan Ceylan that “they are trying to break [his] will”.

Ozelmali had said: “They are telling me to stop the hunger strike and they will treat me. They took me to the hospital two weeks ago. I told the doctors that I’m sick, they didn’t believe me. They make up fake reports and put me back in prison. I can’t tend to my needs alone in the prison. My friends have to help me. But this hunger strike is not about my release, not really. It is about my unawful imprisonment. They want me to turn away from my struggle. I should have been released during the Rahsan Ecevit Pardon [passed in 2000]. I have been held here under fake reports and indictments. If my hunger strike doesn’t achieve results, I will submit a petititon and go on a death fast in the coming days.”
