French philosopher Edgar Morin expressed his support for the “Peace and Democratic Society” call made by Abdullah Ocalan on 27 February.
In a message to the Imrali Delegation and the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), 104-year-old French philosopher and sociologist Edgar Morin wrote: "The peace and democratization process in Turkey is a requirement of human dignity. For this reason, I declare that I am in favor of the unity of the Turkish and Kurdish peoples against the regional provocations of imperialism."
The message was reportedly sent in both Turkish and French, and added: "As an intellectual who believes that free thought and democratic debate are common values of humanity, I fully support the peace and democratic transformation process in Turkey.
In this historical process that started with the handshake of Devlet Bahçeli, the leader of the Nationalist Movement Party, with Kurdish politicians and continued with the Call for Peace and Democratic Society, dated 27 February, by Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan, who is in Imrali Prison, I invite everyone to respect and strengthen the will of the Turkish and Kurdish people to live together. We have known since Socrates that what makes a person human is to think freely and to talk to others. After all, isn't thinking a silent dialogue that a person establishes with himself?
Peace is people being able to talk freely with themselves and each other. Peace is not becoming the same, but giving each other a chance, trying to convince without destroying. The peace and democratization process in Turkey is a requirement of human dignity. For this reason, I declare that I am in favor of the unity of the Turkish and Kurdish peoples against the regional provocations of imperialism.
Long live freedom, long live democracy."
