NAV-BEL denies Kurdish involvement in Liege clash

Violent clashes have occurred in Liège in which one person was shot dead. The umbrella organization NAV-BEL denies the account that one of the parties to the conflict was Kurdish.

Two days ago in Liège, Belgium, there was a violent confrontation in which one person was shot. Two other people involved were seriously injured. According to police, 28 people were arrested. Commenting on the incident, the Kurdish umbrella organization NAV-BEL says that it was a conflict between Chechens and Moroccans, which is, however, wanted to be blamed on the Kurds.

According to NAV-BEL, the two parties to the conflict had already threatened and insulted each other two days before the clash, including on digital networks. On the day of the incident, the Chechen group attacked a kebab store run by Yazidi Kurds, where a Moroccan had taken refuge.

NAV-BEL denied the news spread in the Belgian media that Kurds were involved in the incident and took part in the shooting. "This is intended to criminalize the Kurdish people and their struggle," the association's statement said.

"As Kurds living in Belgium, we do not approve of such incidents of violence that destroy the tranquility of society. This is public knowledge. We demand that what happened be clarified," NAV-BEL said, pointing out that it is also clear from the social media accounts of the two opposing groups that the Kurds have nothing to do with it.

The association assumes that the Kurds are intentionally associated with the incident: "The Kurdish people are being done a great injustice with this, they must not allow themselves to be provoked."

According to a press release from the Liège prosecutor's office, the incident is said to have been a "settling of accounts between two criminal youth gangs."

The statement claimed that members of a Chechen gang from Verviers came to Liege to seek confrontation with a gang of young Kurds. To this end, they carried heavy weapons, including a Kalashnikov found by police in a vehicle. One person was shot and died a short time later. Two others were seriously injured. Police deployed more than a hundred officers and completely sealed off the area. 28 suspects were arrested.
