Kurds in Europe take to the streets for Öcalan

Kurds living in Europe are calling for further contact with Abdullah Öcalan.

Kurds living in Europe are calling for further contact with Abdullah Öcalan through various actions.

After almost a year without any contact with the Kurdish people's leader, who has been imprisoned in Imrali for 22 years, his brother Mehmet Öcalans was able to have a short telephone conversation with him on Thursday.

The connection was lost after a few minutes and the concern about his condition remains. In the few minutes of the phone call, Abdullah Öcalan had requested immediate contact with his legal team and stated that the Turkish state was playing a highly dangerous game. His isolation is a political and legal issue. The legal team was last able to visit Öcalan in August 2019 on the Imrali prison island.

As a result of this development, spontaneous protests took place in Switzerland, Belgium, France, Germany and Cyprus, which the European umbrella organization KCDK-E and the women's movement TJK-E had called for.

In Geneva, Kurdish activists tried to get a meeting with “Doctors Without Borders” and handed over an information dossier to the Le Courrier newspaper.

Spontaneous rallies took place in Basel, Lucerne and Zurich.

In St. Gallen, Kurdish youths visited the daily newspaper and handed over an information dossier.

In Bern, Kurds organised a protest in front of the main train station.

Immediate contact with Öcalan was requested during a protest in Brussels.

In Paris, Kurdish youth carried out a civil disobedience action in front of Radio France.

In Duisburg, the Kurdish youth movement took to the streets with a spontaneous demonstration.
