While speaking Kurdish is still not permitted in Turkey even in courts, Kurdish deputies in Iraqi Parliament will be able to express themselves in Kurdish at the meetings of the Council of Ministers.
Arabic and Kurdish are recognized as official languages in federal Iraq. Kurdish deputies, indicating that this is a constitutional right, demanded to speak Kurdish in the parliament. While the Iraqi Parliament has started technical preparations for Kurdish, it was reported that Kurdish, besides Arabic, will be allowed in the parliament in February.
Speaking to Rudaw newspaper, Kurdistan Alliance member Mueyed Teyib reminded that Kurdish and Arabic are official languages of Iraq in the constitution, calling attention to the translation service given in other parliaments where different languages are spoken.
Teyip remarked that Kurdish parliamentarians could have demanded to speak their native language in previous sessions but haven’t introduced a demand so far as they know Arabic as well.
Teyib said; "Although Kurdish parliamentarians know Arabic, we introduced a demand in this session to speak Kurdish for the recognition of Kurdish in the parliament as a Constitutional right”.
Kurdish parliamentarian Teyib expressed that technical preparations are being made for Kurdish in the parliament hall, saying; “After the end of parliament abeyance, each Kurdish person will be free to speak Kurdish by the beginning of February”. Teyip added that translation services will be provided in this respect.
Teyip said; “Besides, Kurdish ministers in Iraqi government will be able to speak Kurdish at the meetings of Council of Ministers as in the parliament.
