Kurdish activists in Cologne send letters for Öcalan's freedom to UN

In Cologne, Kurds have sent letters to UN Secretary General António Guterres in a collective action to call on the United Nations to act for the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan and a just peace in Turkey.

In Cologne, letters have been sent to UN Secretary General António Guterres in a collective action. The letter campaign was initiated in January by the South African trade union federation COSATU and the Kurdish Human Rights Action Group (KHRAG) in South Africa. The aim of a coordinated international solidarity campaign is to persuade the UN to act for the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan and a just peace in Turkey.

The Kurdish activists in Cologne gathered for this purpose with pictures of Öcalan and a banner in front of the post office to drop their cover letters one by one into the mailbox. One of the activists gave a speech explaining the content of the campaign, saying, "In Cologne we want to gather 5000 signatures as part of the international campaign."
