The Confederation of Kurdistan Communities in Germany (KON-MED) views the election results with concern. The Bundestag has shifted to the right, with the far-right AfD doubling its share of votes in last Sunday's federal election. Nationwide, the party secured over 20 percent, with significantly higher numbers in the East.
The co-chairs of the Kurdish umbrella organization, Emine Ruken Akça and Kerem Gök, said that a particularly troubling development is the "collective shift in discourse to the right" within the migration debate, with right-wing framings and narratives being adopted across almost the entire political spectrum. It is precisely this discourse that has legitimized and strengthened right-wing ideology. "More than 10 million people have chosen the original. The statistics on voter shifts speak for themselves," said KON-MED.
The Kurdish organization added: "Issues such as social justice, education, and healthcare played only a minor role in the election campaign. Yet these areas are crucial, especially when it comes to defending and further developing democratic achievements. These developments - also in the context of the global shift to the right as a response to the systemic crisis - are extremely dangerous. A fundamental change in discourse is essential."
KON-MED sees the election results as a mandate to intensify its commitment to grassroots democracy and justice. "In this spirit, we congratulate all elected democrats. We are pleased that numerous members of the Kurdish community have also made it into the Bundestag. Now, it is time to open a new chapter together for a just and peaceful future. The momentum for fundamental change is now."
