Captive Amed Co-mayor Gültan Kışanak stated that the Özgürlükçü Demokrasi newspaper is the voice of the prisons and added that its usurpation means the prevention of the public’s right to information.
Amed Metropolitan Municipality Co-mayor Gültan Kışanak, held hostage in the Kocaeli Type F Prison No.1, sent a letter and protested the usurpation of the Özgürlükçü Demokrasi newspaper.
Kışanak said: “I condemn the appointment of trustees to the Özgürlükçü Demokrasi newspaper and the Gün Printing House, and wish them a swift reuniting with their readers. Press freedom is the right of the public to factual information, rather than the freedom of journalists to deliver truth to the people.”
“WE EAGERLY AWAIT”
Gültan Kışanak said she considers the attack against the Özgürlükçü Demokrasi newspaper to be an attack against the right to information and continued: “For us prisoners who don’t have access to correct information through other channels, the situation is even more dire. The Özgürlükçü Demokrasi newspaper has always been the voice of the prisons. It has always been our voice and our ears on the outside and the conscience of the public. We will eagerly await the day our newspaper restarts its print. I hope we won’t have to wait for long.
