Fossalto Municipality in Italy granted honorary citizenship to Abdullah Öcalan.

Fossalto municipality in the Molise region, of Italy has granted Honorary citizenship to Kurdish people's leader Abdullah Öcalan.

Mayor Saverio Nonno stated in his speech at the City Council that Öcalan was deemed worthy of this award because of his efforts for peace.

Reminding that the philosophy developed by Öcalan has its clearest example in Rojava where women are at the forefront of political and social life, Nonno stated that they are late to give Öcalan honorary citizenship as a municipality. Nonno called on other municipalities to take the same step.

Nonno had promised before the municipal elections on 3 July that he would award the honorary citizenship award to the Kurdish people in the person of Öcalan. Nonno had won the elections by a huge margin.

In January 2019, Tufara Municipality (Campobasso) also granted Öcalan honorary citizenship.

The municipalities of Campobasso, Castelbottaccio, Palermo, Napoli, Palagonia, Reggio Emilia, Riace, Martano and Pinerolo had all awarded the Kurdish people's leader with the keys of the city.
