Iranian regime forces attack people protesting election results

Regime forces attacked the people protesting the results of city council elections in the mainly Arab Ahwaz city of Iran.

Protests against violations and fraud in the presidential and village-city council elections held in Iran on May 19 continue. Following the objection to election results in East Kurdistan, results of the fraudulent elections are also protested in the Ahwaz city.

In the first announcement after the elections, it was declared that Arabs won 13 seats in the city council in the city of Ahwaz that is inhabited by mainly Sunni Arabs and affiliated to the Khuzestan province southwest of Iran. However, in the following official announcement of election results, Arabs were declared to have won only 3 seats in the city council, which resulted in masses taking to the streets to protest the results. Following two days of demonstrations, regime forces staged a crackdown on protestors today.

Sources speaking to ANF told that regime forces attacked the people that had gathered in front of the district governor's office and Ahwaz Election Commission. While many were injured during the crackdown, the regime reinforced police and Itlaat (intelligence) members to the city.

70 percent of the votes has reportedly been stolen as part of the massive election fraud. Islamic Republic News Agency, Fars News Agency and Mehr News Agency have reported “election irregularities”.

The other 10 people reported to have won seats in the city council are reported to be supporters of the regime. Tensions continue in the city.
