HDP’s Temelli: Economy is out of control amid a governance crisis

HDP co-chair confirmed the country is facing a governance crisis.

Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Co-chair Sezai Temelli, Parliamentary Deputy Speaker Mithat Sancar, Group Deputy Chairs Fatma Kurtulan and Ayhan Bilgen made a visit of courtesy to Parliamentary Speaker Binali Yıldırım on Tuesday.

Temelli said after the visit that "we congratulated him and said that the 27th legislature is for all of us a time of expectations. As you know - said Temelli - the 26th legislature saw many unwanted things. This new period must be shaped and defined by democracy that Turkey needs".

The delegation talked about the situation of HDP Hakkari deputy Leyla Güven and Enis Berberoğlu, who are still in prison. "We emphasised - said Temelli - that the parliament should take steps according to democratic practices and dialogue. The Parliament is the place where the whole society should find its representation".

The HDP today, said Temelli, "will continue its struggle for democracy in Turkey in Parliament where we will continue to be the voice of all sections of society. We have emphasized that we see this parliament as the people's parliament."

Temelli was asked by journalists: "What do you think about the new authorities given to the governors and the district governors?

He said: "There is already an atmosphere of chaos, the country is witnessing a crisis of governance. Now governors have super powers and we have serious concerns about what this will bring about."

Temelli added: "In the presidential system, everything goes back to one person who is in total control. We can face the different rulings of each prosecutor and district governor. An environment of trustees has been created and we know that it is meant to be expanded further. The current government seeks to produce a further control system with regards to overcoming the existing governance crisis.”

Asked about the inflation forecast of the Central Bank, HDP co-chair Temelli answered: "It is a very dramatic increase, 5 points. We think that the Central Bank is not able to make an inflation-oriented arrangement, and this is actually the sign that the economy is now out of control. Indeed,  there can be no interest regulation where the expectation is a 5 points inflation increase".
