HDP: Hakkari MP Leyla Güven must be released

The court release rule on the Hakkari MP has been illegally reverted.

Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) deputy co-chair and Batman deputy Ayşe Acar Başaran released a statement about the situation of MP Leyla Güven, still in prison as a political hostage.

''Talking about outrageous judicial decisions, - the statement reads - the last example is that about Hakkari deputy Leyla Güven. Lawyers filed an application on 26 June for her, who has already suffered a brutal and illegitimate detention based on unfounded and abstract allegations."

The statement continued: "On June 29, at around 11 am, the court ruled to free Leyla Güven, but the sentence was not written. The sentence to free her was not carried out; court decision was not taken into account; Leyla Güven's freedom was arbitrarily taken away by the Prosecutor's office, despite being illegal.

Diyarbakir Chief Public Prosecutor appealed against the rule; the court stated that the prosecutor's office objected verbally. A higher court also lifted the decision of release, and confirmed that our deputy Leyla Güven should remain in prison. The attorney general has prevented the release and committed the offense of depriving a person of her liberty.

The appeal court also verbally stated that the detention is to be continued. Despite the fact that the court was busy in another session, how come it decided to examine and rule on this case? This is not clear."

The statement also added: "A file is not likely to be examined in such a short time, so the delegation decided without examination and on the basis of instructions. A court, which does not have authority on the case, has decided to lift the release ruling given by another court.

Once again, the judiciary confirms that such decisions depends on a benevolent and biased situation. Leyla Güven continues to be held hostage unlawfully and arbitrarily.

Leyla Güven, who was elected deputy in the 24 June elections, must be released immediately without further obstacles.''
