German police raid Kurdish center Medya Volkshaus in Nuremberg

German police once again raided the Medya Volkshaus, a center for democratic society in Nuremberg. The co-chair was taken into custody for alleged violation of §129 a/b of the German Criminal Code.

In the early morning hours, German police raided the Kurdish community center Medya Volkshaus in Nuremberg. The police, accompanied by special forces, forcibly entered the premises, ransacked the association's rooms and damaged a number of objects. A number of documents were confiscated. People who happened to be present were subjected to identity checks and questioned without being given the opportunity to consult a lawyer. The officers did not state a reason for the search.

Almost at the same time, Makbule Kartal, co-chair of the Democratic Society and Culture Center, was detained and brought to Munich for a hearing. In the presence of her lawyer, her detention was ordered for alleged violation of §129 a/b. She is alleged to have worked as a “front worker” for the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). She is now in Munich-Stadelheim prison.

The officials at the Medya Volkshaus are dismayed that their center has once again been targeted by the authorities. They point out that the raid is incompatible with democracy and the right of association, and call on the public to stand in solidarity with the Medya Volkshaus.
