Five French mayors have written an open letter to the French Foreign Ministry. They appeal to the French Foreign Minister to stand up against the attacks on Afrin.

The initiator, the mayor of Metz, Dominique Gros, was able to mobilize the support of the cities of Vandœuvre-lès-Nancy, Sarreguemines, Kuntzig and Ottange in the Moselle region.

Each city administration wrote a letter addressed to French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian. In the letter, which addresses the "unbearable humanitarian situation" of the inhabitants of Afrin, the following statements were made:

"The attack against Afrin that Turkey has started with the support of forces of the 'Free Syrian Army' is illegal, morally illegitimate and outside the space defined by international law. This is immoral, while the Kurds have heroically defended democratic values and human rights during the Battle of Kobanê.

Today, the US, Russia and other forces are closing their eyes to the Turkish regime's attacks on the Kurds. Contrary to this declared stance, France should begin a humanitarian initiative in accordance with our universal ideals and values to provide help to the encircled population of Afrin."
