Former prime minister Mesut Yilmaz passes away

Turkey's former prime minister and Motherland Party (Anavatan) leader Mesut Yilmaz passed away.

Former prime minister and Motherland Party of Turkey (Anavatan) chairman Mesut Yilmaz passed away.

Yilmaz, 73 was being treated in a private hospital for a lung tumor discovered during a routine health check-up in January last year.

As a result of the operation performed on 23 January 2019, the tumor was cleared. Yılmaz, however, found out to have a tumor in the brain stem in May 2020. He had been treated for about 2 months after a new operation.

Yilmaz was appointed as prime minister three times between 1991 and 1999, serving as premier for a period of two years in total.
