Florence Nightingale Hospital: Sırrı Süreyya Önder still in critical condition

Florence Nightingale Hospital has announced that Sırrı Süreyya Önder, who was hospitalized and underwent surgery on the night of 15 April, is still in critical condition.

Florence Nightingale Hospital released a statement about the health status of Sırrı Süreyya Önder, Deputy Speaker of Parliament and a member of the DEM Party’s İmralı Delegation. In the statement, it was noted that Önder’s condition remains life-threatening.

Sırrı Süreyya Önder, Deputy Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and a member of the People's Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Imrali Delegation, suffered a heart problem in Istanbul at 11:00 p.m. on 15 April.

He was taken by ambulance to Florence Nightingale Hospital, where it was reported that he had a full-length tear in his main aortic artery and was immediately taken into surgery.

The hospital's statement is as follows: "Mr. Sırrı Süreyya Önder was brought to our Emergency Unit by 112 Ambulance teams at around 22:41 on 15.04.2025, pulseless, intubated, and undergoing cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

After approximately 10 minutes of CPR in our emergency room, spontaneous circulation was achieved and a pulse was detected. An emergency echocardiogram revealed Type I Aortic Dissection (a bleeding condition involving all layers of the aorta including the ascending aorta, aortic arch, and descending aorta).

At 23:05, a rhythm disturbance occurred again, and the pulse and circulation stopped. Following resuscitation efforts, the patient was urgently taken to the operating room, and surgery began at 23:35.

During the surgery, it was found that the aortic dissection began from the right coronary artery and extended through the entire aorta. A coronary bypass was performed on the right coronary artery, the aortic valve was replaced, and grafting and anastomosis procedures were completed along the entire aorta.

However, despite the success of all the surgical procedures, the right side of the heart is not contracting well due to the extensive dissection and involvement of the right coronary artery, while the left side is functioning adequately.

After a surgery lasting nearly 12 hours, Mr. Önder was transferred to our Intensive Care Unit with ECMO (a cardiac circulatory support device).

His condition remains critical and life-threatening."
