Families and lawyers apply to visit Imralı

The lawyers and families of Kurdish people's leader Abdullah Öcalan and the other prisoners in Imralı filed a new application to Bursa Chief Public Prosecutor's Office to be granted a visit to the island prison.

The brother of Kurdish people's leader Abdullah Öcalan, Mehmet Öcalan and his tutelar, Mazlum Dinç, applied to the Bursa Chief Public Prosecutor's Office requesting permission to go to Imralı between 20 and 22 May.

The Kurdish leader’s brother Mehmet Öcalan was last able to visit his brother on 2 March following massive public pressure.

Ömer Hayri Konar’s brother Ali Konar, Hamili Yıldırım's brother Polat Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş' sister Melihe Çetin also applied to the prosecutor's office through their lawyers.

Ömer Hayri Konar and Veysi Aktaş were able to meet with their relatives on 5 June, 12 August 2019 and 2 March 2020. They had not seen their relatives since 15 March 2015.

Hamili Yıldırım was able to meet with his family only on 5 June and 12 August 2019 but not on 2 March 2020 because his brother was ill.

Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş talked on the phone with their families on April 27th.

Öcalan's lawyers Faik Özgür Erol, Cengiz Yürekli, Mazlum Dinç and Nevroz Uysal have also applied to Bursa Chief Public Prosecutor's Office on Wednesday to meet with their clients on a convenient day between 20 and 22 May.

Öcalan’s lawyers were able to meet with their client on 2 May, 22 May, 12 June, 18 June and 7 August 2019 after 8 years of isolation.

The regular requests for visits by the Asrin Legal Office have not been answered by the Public Prosecutor's Office since 7 August 2019.

The tightly guarded prison island of Imrali is completely sealed off from the public, but there is a risk of infection with the novel coronavirus from the guards and prison staff who commute between the island and the mainland.
