The collapse of the Assad regime in Syria on 8 December 2024 opened the way to a new phase in the country’s political and military dynamics. While the regime’s downfall had not entirely ended conflicts and tensions, the international community swiftly established contact with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which had seized power, initiating discussions on the reconstruction of a new Syria.
Having been appointed to lead the transition process, HTS leader Ahmed Al-Sharaa (Al-Jolani) is still perceived as the head of an armed group. However, international actors anticipate his transformation and evolution into a political figure in Syria’s reconstruction process. Yet, this transition has been overshadowed by reports of massacres of Alawites in the country’s coastal regions, sparking outrage within the international community. Meanwhile, the Turkish state, the main supporter of the jihadist group HTS, and its affiliated militia groups continue their attacks on the regions governed by the Autonomous Administration of Northern and Eastern Syria. Recent airstrikes have resulted in the deaths of dozens of civilians, including women and children.
Popular Unity Candidacy (Candidatura d'Unitat Popular - CUP) MP in the Catalan Parliament, Eulalia Reguant, spoke to ANF about the attacks on Rojava.
It does not recognize the Kurdish people's right to exist
Eulalia Reguant condemned Turkey's attacks on Rojava, calling them an occupation campaign. She stated: "Since the establishment of Rojava, the Turkish state has continuously attacked the region and the Kurdish people. This is not a two-sided war; it is a clear occupation. The Turkish state is deliberately targeting civilians in the region. While there is no threat from Rojava towards Turkey, the people of the region are constantly subjected to attacks. The main objective of the Turkish state and its militias is to take full control of the area and deny the Kurdish people their right to exist."
The international community must not remain silent
Reguant accused Turkish President Erdoğan of seeking to rebuild Ottoman hegemony in the region and urged the international community to take action. She said: "The Turkish state is deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure, energy resources, and water facilities, making life unbearable for civilians and forcing them to flee. The international community must focus on what is happening in the region and stop pretending that it can maintain normal relations with Turkey. Turkey's policy in the region is to deepen the war and put civilians at even greater risk."
