Equal marriage becomes effective in Ecuador

With the official publication of the ruling on the case of the Constitutional Court, dated June 12, equal marriage in Ecuador is now legal.

The delay in its publication, which turns the rule into legal, was due to the strong resistance of organizations linked to various churches that filed several legal appeals to reverse the decision of the Costitutional Court.

With the recognition of equal marriage Ecuador joins the countries of the region, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Uruguay, which have recognized that same right.

The recognition of both the right to equal marriage and divorce or abortion have been progressing gradually in some countries in the region, in the face of strong resistance from the influential catholic church, the increasingly powerful evangelical churches, and the growth of the conservative governments.
