Deposed co-mayor of Eğil faces up to 15 years in jail

Up to 15 years in prison sought for co-mayor of Eğil Municipality, Gülistan Ensarioğlu, who was deposed from office by the AKP-MHP regime.

Gülistan Ensarioğlu, deposed co-mayor of the Egil district of Diyarbakır, was detained on September 30, 2020 as part of an investigation against the Democratic Society Congress (DTK). The democratically elected and unlawfully deposed mayor is accused of "membership to a terrorist organization".

The second hearing of the case was held at the 9th High Criminal Court of Diyarbakır on Wednesday. Ensarioğlu attended the hearing without arrest. Her lawyers Feride Laçin and Uğur Bingöl were also present.

The prosecution, evaluating Ensaroğlu's activities within the DTK as "actions conducted as a member of a terrorist organization", demanded a prison sentence from 7,5 to 15 years in prison.

Ensarioğlu's lawyers requested additional time for defense. The court board decided on the continuation of the judicial control measure and the acceptance of the additional time request and adjourned the next hearing to 28 June.
