Civil disobedience by Kurdish activists at France TV in Paris

Activists of the Kurdish youth movement have carried out an action of civil disobedience at France Télévisions in Paris. The background is rumors about the death of Abdullah Öcalan on the Turkish prison island of Imrali.

In Paris, members of the Kurdish youth movement carried out a civil disobedience action at the premises of France Télévisions. With their action, the activists drew attention to rumors in Turkey that Abdullah Öcalan, leader and founder of the PKK, had died in prison.

Öcalan has been held as a political hostage on the Turkish prison island of Imrali since he was abducted from Kenya in 1999 in violation of international law - most of the time in total isolation. In light of Öcalan's alleged death, Kurdish society is demanding reliable information about his current situation and is now filling the streets worldwide to urge international organizations to intervene. An urgent request by Öcalan's lawyers for a visit to Imrali continues to go unanswered by Turkish authorities.

"We demand that the uncertainty be ended immediately. All our people are concerned about the life of Abdullah Öcalan, who is our red line. Not only international organizations and bodies have the responsibility to act, but also the media," one of the activists said about the background of the action.
