Astana meeting: much of the same

As representatives of Russia, Iran and Turkey meet in Astana on 28 and 29 November, the Syrian Democratic Council prepares the second opposition working meeting in Ayn Isa to find a Syrian solution to the Syria crisis.

Representatives of Russia, Iran and the Turkish state are preparing to convene in Astana for the 11th time as part of their Syrian agenda on 28-29 November.

On the same date Syrian opposition groups and independent figures will gather in Ayn Isa, in Northern Syria.

The meeting is organized for the second time by the presidency of the Syrian Democratic Council (Meclîsa Sûriya Demokratîk – MSD) and is expected to get together 90 delegates from dozens of opposition political parties, movements and independent figures from all parts of Syria.

The first meeting was held on 19 July. "Human condition, management model, economic situation, the new constitution, common issues between opposition parties and women issues" will be discussed.

Speaking to the ANF about the meeting, member of the Diplomatic Committee of the MSD, Ferhad Hemo, said that the decision to carry out this workshop was taken at the previous meeting.

In the first working meeting, a committee of 14 people was established. “Our main objective – said Hemo - was to bring Syrian people closer to each other and find common points. In this next working meeting representatives of many political structures from almost all regions of Syria will come together. We estimate some 90 people will participate.”

Hemo said that there are 6 main issues in the working meeting agenda. “These are the humanitarian situation in Syria, the discussions on the Syrian governance model, the economic situation in Syria, the new Syrian constitution, Syrian women and the Syrian opposition structures. exchange of views on the various topics."

Referring to the meeting held in Astana, Hemo said: "So far, a solution for Syria has always been sought outside, or was searched by other powers. But we, Syrians, are gathering together and discussing the solution to the Syrian crisis within the Syrian territory. Iran, Turkey and Russia will get together in Astana the same day as the meeting. But neither the regime nor the opposition will participate. We do not believe this way will solve the Syrian problem. We say let's solve this problem within ourselves.”

The main issue on the agenda for Russia, Iran and the Turkish state in Astana will be Idlib. In September, the Syrian regime and Russia started preparations for the operation in Idlib, and after the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan in Sochi in October, the operation was postponed.

According to some information, Russia in this meeting, will bring to the table the request issued at previous meetings to the Turkish state, that of dividing armed groups in Idlib.

The first meeting in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, dedicated to the solution of the so-called Syrian crisis, was held on 23 January 2017. Turkey, Russia and Iran acted as talks guarantors and met 9 times in Astana. The tenth meeting was held in Sochi, Russia.

More than 50 meetings in Geneva, Vienna, Munich, Astana, Riyadh, Cairo and Sochi were held to find a so-called political / diplomatic "solution" to the Syrian crisis and civil war that has been going on since 2011. But these talks have led to the exacerbation of war in Syria.
