Another police attack on May Day alliance in Istanbul

In Istanbul, a rally for May Day has again been attacked by police, with numerous arrests. The Corona restrictions in Turkey are only enforced against the opposition, criticized the HDP politician Musa Piroğlu.

In Kadiköy district of Istanbul, police attacked a rally under the slogan "May Day cannot be banned" and detained numerous people using force. The rally site had been besieged by police hours before, the reason given was a ban on events in the wake of the Corona restrictions. The activists of the Istanbul May Day Alliance protested against the arbitrariness of the authorities and were surrounded by the police.

HDP deputy Musa Piroğlu pointed out in the police encirclement that May Day cannot be banned with reference to the pandemic in a country where the ruling parties hold congresses and gatherings with a large turnout, and that the alliance will defend itself against this. The alliance announced that it will take to the streets on May 1.

Among those taken into custody are Kaber Saygili, president of the Limter-İş union, as well as TÖP president Perihan Koca and lawyer Tamer Doğan. Forty people had been detained in Istanbul's Bakirköy district on Wednesday during a rally on the same topic.
