Academics and artists wrote to Merkel on hunger strikers

A number of academics and artists, including Esther Bejarano, the survivor of the Nazi Auschwitz concentration camp, published an open letter addressed to German chancellor Merkel stating the need of ending isolation.

Actions of solidarity and support to the hunger strike resistance launched by HDP Hakkari MP Leyla Güven continue.

The latest has been an open letter written to 21 artists, academics and politicians to German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The artists and academics said in their letter that they support to demand put forward by Leyla Güven to end isolation and drew attention to the serious health condition of many hunger strikers.

"Turkey, a signatory of the European Convention on Human Rights, should be urged to begin peace talks to resolve the Kurdish issue and isolation against Abdullah Öcalan should be lifted as it is one or the requirement for a process of dialogue leading to the peaceful settlement of the Kurdish issue.”

The signatories also criticised the “Federal Government, one of the best allies on these issues, for not putting political pressure on Turkey over these issues. We also believe that the German Ministers in the Council of Europe should be prompted to put pressure on the Turkish government.”

The letter also reminded the appeal of German State Secretary Michael Roth on 16 January 2019, demanding that Öcalan could be visited by his lawyers and family on behalf of the Federal Government.

The signatories also underlined the fact that as long as the Kurdish question remains and peace is not addressed properly in Turkey, thousands of people will be forced to migrate.

Among the signatories was Nazi camp survivor Esther Bejarano, who is currently 93 years old. She tried to keep up the morale of the girls forced to work in Auschwitz concentration camp by setting up an orchestra.

Bejarano, last year, had called on Turkey to stop the invasion of Afrin.
