Öcalan’s birthday celebrated in Lavrio

Celebrations to mark Öcalan’s 71st birthday have continued in Lavrio since yesterday.

Kurdish people’s leader Abdullah Öcalan turns 71 today and Kurds and their friends are celebrating his birthday in Kurdistan and mainly on social media due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Öcalan’s birthday has been celebrated also in the mainly Kurdish inhabited refugee camp in the Lavrio city in Greece. The celebrations began yesterday with a volleyball tournament and cinevision depicting the life of the Kurdish leader.

Today’s celebration in the city began at noon with a minute’s silence in memory of the martyrs of freedom struggle. The camp was covered with images of Öcalan and flags of the PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party).

Speaking here, Saliha Afrin said; “The 4th of April is the birth of Leader Apo (Öcalan) and of the Kurdish people and oppressed peoples. The free women’s struggle in Kurdistan was born and raised with Leader Apo and has spread to the entire world with the Rojava Revolution.”

The traditional tree planting activity did not take place this year due to Covid-19 pandemic. The celebration then continued with choir, folklore and poem performances.
