Öcalan’s lawyers speak at the Norwegian Parliament

The meeting was attended by Red Party MPs Bjørnar Moxnes, Hege Bae Nyholdt and Seher Aydar, as well as representatives of Solidaritet med Kurdistan, NCDK, and officials from organizations in Rojava, Bashûr and Rojhilat.

Abdullah Öcalan’s lawyers İbrahim Bilmez and Cengiz Yürekli traveled to Oslo on the invitation of the Norwegian Red Party (Rødt) and held a series of meetings at the Norwegian Parliament.

The meeting, which was attended by Red Party MPs Bjørnar Moxnes, Hege Bae Nyholdt and Seher Aydar, as well as representatives of Solidaritet med Kurdistan, NCDK, and officials from organizations in Rojava, Bashûr and Rojhilat, discussed the absolute isolation system in İmralı, the initiatives for a resolution process in Turkey and the calls for peace.

Delivering the opening speech of the meeting, lawyer İbrahim Bilmez talked about the process that started with Öcalan‘s handover to Turkey by an international conspiracy and stated that the Imrali prison system was established with international support. Bilmez underlined that today there is a policy of isolation not only for Abdullah Öcalan but also for all of Kurdistan.

Bilmez also referred to the developments he described as the second “resolution process” and said that Devlet Bahçeli's handshake with DEM Party deputies, Ömer Öcalan's visit to İmralı and Bahçeli's appeal to 'Let Öcalan speak in Parliament' were remarkable.

After these steps, a delegation met with Abdullah Öcalan and he gave the message 'I can move the process from violence to legal and political grounds'.

Lawyer Cengiz Yürekli made evaluations on how Öcalan’s ‘Call for Peace and Democratic Society’ has been received in the four parts of Kurdistan and the Middle East. He gave concrete examples of the repercussions within the government and opposition in Turkey and emphasized that international public opinion should follow this process carefully.

Red Party MP Bjørnar Moxnes stated that they were following the process carefully and found Öcalan's call for peace valuable, and asked, “What kind of support do you expect from us?”

“The Kurdish question has gained an international character,” Bilmez said, adding that the resolution concerns all democratic and socialist circles with its social, ecological, women and youth dimensions. “In this context, we thank them for their contributions and support, and we expect more contributions and support,” Bilmez replied.

The meeting ended with the questions of the other participants and speeches of thanks. The lawyers will continue to take part in different events during their visit in Oslo.
