8 people receive 24 years prison sentence 12 years later

Eight people were sentenced to a total of 24 years and 4 months in prison on the grounds that they participated in a protest held in 2008 in Cizre.

An action was held in Cizre, province of Şırnak on 15 February 2008 to protest the international conspiracy against Kurdish people's leader Abdullah Öcalan.

A young man named Yahya Menekşe, who participated in these protests, lost his life crashed bya panzer. On 16 February, an investigation was opened against 8 people alleging that they attended the funeral of Menekşe and for "committing a crime on behalf of an illegal organization, although not being a member of an illegal organization".

It was stated that the prison sentence of 3 months and 15 days, given separately to 8 people on the grounds that they attended the funeral, was recently approved by the Supreme Court.

HDP Cizre executives Mustafa Ecevit, Ali Ecevit, Nesim Dalmış, Mehmet Zeki Eliş, Nimet Şen, Nihat Kantik, Sabahattin Ildem and Ekrem Inedi were detained following home raids. The detainees were sent to Şırnak T Type Closed Prison after the arrest warrant was read to them.
