Villages besieged by Turkish army in Gever

In Gever, several villages have been cordoned off by the Turkish army. Before that, a military operation was launched in the district where troops were being deployed. Several targets were bombed by combat helicopters.

In the northern Kurdish district of Gever (Yüksekova), several villages are besieged by the Turkish army. The background is a military operation in the Astenga Reş region, which includes the villages of Şîşemzîn, Xurekana Seyîda and Xurekana Temo. A curfew was imposed on the villagers, which means that entering and leaving the besieged villages is prohibited.

The operation began on Sunday morning with the relocation of armored units and the Turkish Air Force. According to available information, troops have been deployed to the operational area, and combat helicopters are flying over the region. Several targets have already been bombed. Before the operation started, several residents of Şîşemzîn, who were mowing on the village’s own mountain pasture, were attacked and expelled by the military.

It was learned that 4 of the 20 villagers who were forcibly taken to the attack areas were Iranian nationals and worked as shepherds in the village, and 2 of them were children. The names of the 13 people who were taken to the attack areas by Turkish soldiers and who were later detained are as follows: Zozan Turgut (45), Nevin Turgut (8), Rahmi Turgut, Rojhat Turgut, Deniz Turgut, Necmettin Turgut, Nedim Turgut, İzzettin Turgut, Behçet Engüdar , Fırat Engüdar, Demhat Engüdar, Birhat Engüdar and Özgür Engüdar.

It was stated that those detained were taken to the Kısıklı Gendarmerie Command. According to the information received, 13 people detained will be taken to Yüksekova District Gendarmerie Command.

It is not known how long the curfew will remain in force. For the affected population, the measure means complete isolation from the outside world. It is still unclear whether there have already been clashes with the guerrillas. Turkish military actions are currently also taking place in other regions of Northern Kurdistan.

Gever belongs to the province of Hakkari. The city is located in the border triangle between Turkey, Iran and Iraq. The Turkish army operates a large base area in the mountainous region of Gever. In the south, the district borders on the Kurdistan region of Iraq and thus on the Medya Defense Areas.
