Two weeks ordeal for family of Kurdish guerrilla

The family of Abdulkerim Tufan met with Sýrnak Governor Vahdettin Ozkan. The body of their son who lost his life in Uludere two weeks ago, has not yet been released to the family. Father Ahmet Tufan asked to be allowed to take the body of his son, but was responded by Governor Tufan as follows; “We cannot go into that region since it is a mined land. We can provide village-guards for you if you want to go there and take the bodies.”

Despite all efforts and applications, the family of Abdulkerim Tufan (Þiyar Ekendi) cannot get any reliable information about their son who was among the HPG members losing their lives during a clash with the army in Uludere/Sýrnak between 12-14 May. Unable to find the body in Malatya Forensic Medicine Institution, the family came to Sýrnak, the area of the clash. Appealing to Sýrnak Public Prosecution Office, father Ahmet Tufan, Bedri Bagdu and Sýrnak Mayor Ramazan Uysal had a meeting with Sýrnak Governor Ozkan which was also joined by Provincial Security Director Ali Doðan Uludag.

'We do not have the body’

While Mayor Uysal expressed that they had received news that one of the bodies is held at Ortaköy Police Station, father Ahmet Tufan said the followings; “You have the body. We want to take it. The General Staff officially stated that 12 people lost their lives. So, where are the bodies now? The statement of PKK declared the number of casualties as 10 but two bodies are still missing. We don’t want the tension to rise. The people here are quite sensitive about the issue. Bring the bodies to us. Otherwise, we will go and take the bodies if you cannot.” The response of Governor Ozkan came as follows; “I have talked to all officials including the division commander who informed us that they don’t have the body.”

‘You shall go and take the body after Erdogan’s visit to here’

The proposal of Governor Ozkan was as follows; “We cannot go into that region but I promise to provide security for you after having some talks with village-guards, headmen and the commanders. The Prime Minister will be coming here soon. You can go first on Wednesday morning when he has left. You shouldn’t go there too crowded as there could be mines. The villagers familiar to the region can accompany you.I will meet with the prosecution to write a petition for your security and to start preparations.”

On the other hand, it has been reported that a delegation of IHD Diyarbakir Branch and MEYADER will go to Sýrnak to make inspections about Tufan’s body.
