Turkish warplanes bombed the city of Shengal at 12:00 local time today. The air strike targeted a vehicle, killing two people and injuring one other. The casualties have been taken to the Shengal Hospital.

People rushing to the scene after the attack voiced their reactions as they later moved to the hospital where they keep waiting at the moment.

While the attack came ahead of the Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi’s visit to Shengal, Iraqi forces have also left for the region.

Politician Ali al-Khamimi, who is a member of the Iraqi parliament's defense committee, strongly condemned the attack, saying, "The Turkish state basically bombed Shengal before the eyes of Prime Minister al-Kadhimi. It proves that Turkey does not respect Iraq's territorial sovereignty in any way. Likewise, this incident shows that Ankara also lacks respect for neighboring states."

The Iraqi prime minister, foreign ministry and parliament must now take steps to ensure that investigations are launched at the international level into the war crimes committed by the Turkish state, Al-Khamimi said. Attacks like these should not be accepted with inactive indignation, he added. Meanwhile, the people of Shengal are preparing for mass protests.
