Three assailants killed after the attack on Hewler Governorate

It is reported that three people who attacked the Hewler Governorate this morning have been killed.

Three armed people entered the Governorate building in Hewler (Erbil), capital city of Kurdistan Regional Government, at around 07:45 Monday morning.

Deputy Governor Tahir Abdullah stated that the armed men opened fire on security forces as they approached the entrance of the building, which left a police officer wounded. He said the assailants managed to enter the building and then headed to the third floor.

Amid intense security measures around the building, gunshots were heard from inside for hours. While initial reports suggested that two of the assailants had been killed and one captured alive, it was reported at around 12:00 local time that the third assailant was also killed.

While there is no clear information yet about the identities or the goal of the assailants, no organisation has claimed responsibility for the attack.

According to reports, one government employee was killed and two policemen were wounded in the incident.
