Amed Mesopotamia Ecology Movement is preparing to hold a tent action against the construction plans of a hydroelectric power plant in Kulp district.

The Ecology Movement held a press conference in Amed to announce their one-day action to draw attention to the destruction of the ecological balance of the region. Çilem Akkaya, a member of Amed Ecology Assembly, said the government continued to pursue the construction of hydroelectric power plants and dams for security reasons despite the attempts to sustain the non-conflict environment, stressing that the reason for the construction of hydroelectric plants was far away from producing electricity.

Akkaya stressed that the government pursued a plan of constructing hydroelectric power plants all over Kurdistan and in many places of Anatolia, while the electricity to be produced in these plants amounts to %7 percent of the total need in Turkey. Akkaya drew attention to the fact that the real reason for the construction of these plants and dams on the rivers of Kurdistan had nothing to do with the production of energy as it is officially announced, and aimed to maximize the profits as well as strengthening the political power of the state on Kurdistan.

Amed Ecology Assembly member stressed that these hydroelectric power plants and dams did not only harm the human life, but also destructed the nature and violated the right to water of the nature itself.

Akkaya said the ecology movement will camp in Kulp district of Amed on the banks of Pusu River on 28 March to protest the construction of hydroelectric power plants, adding that panels and forums will also take place during the camp to discuss the destruction that these plants cause on nature and all the living beings.
