Syriza MP Afroditi Stampouli paid a visit to Suruç where she celebrated the International Women's Day of women from Kobanê. Stampouli said she stood by the struggle of the Kurdish women, stressing that “YPJ’s resistance has been a source of hope for all the world women”.
While the victorious Kobanê resistance has started the collapse of the ISIS gangs in the Rojava territory, international groups, NGOs and individuals continue to demonstrate solidarity with the resistance, paying visits to Suruç district of Urfa where thousands of people from Kobanê are sheltered.
Syriza deputy and member of World Women’s Platform, Afrodît Stampouli has also paid a visit to a tent city Suruç and met women from Kobanê on the occasion of 8 March. Commenting on the struggle of the Kurdish women in Kobanê, Stampouli said, “They proved through their struggle that women can defend themselves in the strongest way against any kind of attack at any time”.
Stampouli said she came to Suruç to manifest solidarity with the historic resistance of the Kurdish women against fascist and authoritarian regimes, to build closer relation with the Kurdish women’s movement, in addition to celebrate them for their struggle. “YPJ’s resistance has set an example to the world women and been a source of hope for them”, she said.
Stampouli said they could follow closely the resistance of the YPG/YPJ fighters through press and media in Greece, adding that “The stance of the women of YPJ made us more than happy and was a source of proud for all of us. All the members of the Syriza Party followed the developments in Kobanê closely. Our hearts have always been with them”. Stampouli stressed that the resistance waged by YPG/YPJ forces was a source of hope for them as well.
Regarding the reconstruction of Kobanê, Stampouli said Greek government wanted to take part in the reconstruction of the town despite the economic difficulties it is facing, adding that the government continued its work to arrange the aid support.
Stampouli said the Greek government contributed at the moment to the meeting of the food need as the basic daily needs are still the most urgent ones, adding that the Greek government discussed providing support for Kobanê together with other states and NGOs. “The reconstruction of Kobanê is not a project that one single state could undertake. The European Union must also play its role at this point while we will be doing our best to make it happen”, added Syriza MP.
