The people of Shengal staged a march demanding the release of 5 YBŞ fighters taken prisoner by the Iraqi army last week.
Iraqi troops ambushed a vehicle of Shengal Resistance Units (YBŞ) fighters in Shengal city center on the night of 18 March. According to a statement released by the YBŞ Command on 20 March, five YBŞ fighters in the vehicle were taken prisoner by Iraqi soldiers and some of them were wounded.
The Yazidi Women's Freedom Movement (TAJÊ) organized a protest march on Tuesday under the slogan “The People and the Fighters are One”. The action was supported by the institutions of the Shengal Autonomous Administration and the Arab people.
Making a statement after the march from Sinûnê People's Assembly to Şehîd Mam Zekî Boulevard, Nayif Şemo, Co-Chair of the Democratic Autonomous Assembly of Shengal, denounced the fact that the Iraqi government has not kept its promises.
Noting that YBŞ fighters liberated Shengal from ISIS and have been protecting the region for years, Şemo stated that Iraq has not provided any support to the Yazidi people in this process.
Şemo stressed that the Iraqi state has not dealt with the infrastructure problems of Shengal and has not taken any steps for the displaced people to return home. Emphasizing that the people of Shengal put up great resistance against the brutality of ISIS, Şemo called on the Iraqi Prime Minister to ensure the release of the captured fighters. “Our struggle will continue until our fighters are freed,” Şemo underlined.
