Guerrilla Derwêş Çiya fell as a martyr on 8 September 2024 as the result of a Turkish attack in the Zap region in South Kurdistan. The Press Center of the People's Defense Forces (HPG) paid tribute to the guerrilla in a statement.

The information about the guerrilla was given as follows:

 Code name: Derwêş Çiya

First and last name: Ali Yaman

 Place of birth: Amed

Names of mother and father: Muhterem - Hasan

Date and place of death: 8 September 2024 / Zap

The HPG paid tribute to Derwêş Çiya as a "courageous and self-sacrificing apoist militant who went down in the history of the Kurdistan freedom movement with his struggle.” The statement described his life story and his path to the PKK, as follows: “Derwêş Çiya was born in Amed and belonged to the long-established Bekiran tribe. As a student, first at a state school and later at a Koran school, he was not allowed to speak his mother tongue and often had to hide his Kurdish identity. State oppression was felt in all areas of life. During this time, he got to know the Kurdish freedom movement and took part in legal activities. When the Turkish state unilaterally broke off talks on a political solution to the Kurdish question in 2015, Derwêş became active in the civil defense structure of the YPS and took part in the resistance for self-government in the old town district of Sûr."

The statement continued: "In autumn 2015 he was arrested and spent five years in prison. He did not let himself be broken and in 2019 took part in a mass hunger strike that forced the authorities to allow lawyers to visit Abdullah Öcalan. He used his years in prison for education and personal development.

After his release, Derwêş went to the mountains with two former fellow prisoners and joined the guerrillas. On a training course for new fighters, he learned the military and ideological basics of guerrilla warfare. He later became part of the special unit Hêzên Taybet, which requires ideological depth and explicit willingness to make sacrifices. He was persistent and never gave up, even in difficult moments.

His attitude to life matched his name; he lived modestly like a dervish. At the same time, he was interested in art and culture and loved music. Although he grew up in a religious and feudal environment, he treated his fellow fighters with great respect and love. He questioned his own role in the patriarchal system of rule and followed the philosophy of Abdullah Öcalan. His standards for militancy were clear, and he was trusted. Most recently, he fought on the Western Front in the Zap against the Turkish occupying forces. Our companion Derwêş fell in an attack after an action against the enemy. He will live on and lead us in our fight."
