DAANES calls for international recognition of the Shengal massacre as genocide

The Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria called on the international community to recognise the Shengal massacre as genocide.

The Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES) made a written statement on the 10th anniversary of the 3 August massacre in the Yazidi town of Shengal (Sinjar) in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

DAANES stated that the aim of the massacre against the Yazidi people in Shengal was to destroy a society and its culture. Pointing out that the Yazidi people have faced various persecutions and oppression throughout their history, as well as more than 74 genocidal onslaughts. “However, despite a great tragedy, the heroic Yazidi people healed their wounds to avenge their children and organised themselves in a short time and established the Shengal Resistance Units (YBŞ) in order to liberate Shengal from ISIS gangs.”

Strongly condemning the massacre in Shengal, the Autonomous Administration stated that the inhumane practices of ISIS gangs are against international agreements and human rights and called on the international community and all human rights organisations to recognise the massacre committed by ISIS gangs in Shengal on 3 August 2014 as genocide.
