İmralı delegation: Kurdish actors will play the biggest role

Having conveyed Öcalan’s messages to the officials in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, the DEM Party İmralı Delegation made a press statement after their meeting with Nechirvan Barzani.

After two meetings with Abdullah Öcalan in İmralı F Type High Security Closed Prison on 28 December 2024 and 22 January 2025, the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Imrali delegation continues its talks and meetings with different segments of society and the relevant circles of the Kurdish question.

In addition to delegation members Pervin Buldan and Sırrı Süreyya Önder, Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Co-Chair Keskin Bayındır, Özgür Erol and İbrahim Bilmez from Asrin Law Office, DEM Party Foreign Relations Commission Co-Spokesperson Berdan Öztürk, MPs Gülcan Kaçmaz Sayyiğit and Mehmet Kamaç took part in the talks in southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq).

On Sunday, the delegation with the KDP (Kurdistan Democratic Party) President, Masoud Barzani. In a statement issued after the meeting, the Barzani Press Office said that he was ready to support the progress of the new process and to do his part in this regard.

The İmralı delegation met with Nechirvan Barzani, the president of the Kurdistan Region, this morning. The meeting took place at Barzani's office in Hewlêr.

After the meeting, Keskin Bayındır made a statement on behalf of the delegation at the Governor's Mansion and started his speech by thanking Hewlêr Governor Omed Xoşnaw.

According to the Mesopotamia Agency, Bayındır said, “We started our talks in South Kurdistan with President Massoud Barzani, which lasted 1 hour and 45 minutes. Our delegation conveyed Mr. Öcalan's greetings and messages regarding the efforts underway to achieve a solution. Today we had a meeting with Nechirvan Barzani, the President of the Kurdistan Region. In the same way, we conveyed Mr. Öcalan's greetings. Mr. Öcalan attaches importance to the thoughts of Massoud Barzani and Nechirvan Barzani for the development of the resolution process.” 

Bayındır stated that they talked about the future of the Kurds during the meetings and said: “We talked about how a solution and peace would develop and what the role of Kurdish actors should be in this process. The Kurdish people and the peoples of the Middle East expect a democratic solution to the Kurdish question. The achievement of a resolution in Turkey will also have a positive effect on Bashur (South Kurdistan) and the Middle East. The Kurdish question has become a regional and national issue. All the powers of the world are talking about a solution to the Kurdish question. Kurdish actors will play the biggest role. Mr. Öcalan is taking great initiative for the development of a solution and is trying to move the Kurdish question from the ground of violence and conflict to the political and legal ground. This road map will also end the chaos and crisis in the Middle East.”

Bayındır continued: “Mr. Masoud Barzani has been very supportive in this regard. He said he would support the process. We have been in Hewlêr for two days. We had two important meetings and both went well. The results of these talks will be important for the future of not only the Kurds, but also all the peoples of the Middle East. It will also pave the way for the resolution of all crises on a democratic and legal basis. Our people expect and hope for a solution based on freedom, peace and equality. Kurdish actors, all the institutions and organizations of the Kurdish people are approaching this issue on a national basis. They express their support for this process. Our delegation is ending its visit in Hewlêr and we are moving on to Sulaymaniyah where we will meet with Bafel Talabani and Qubad Talabani. We will make a written statement after these meetings.
