Yurdagül released after 32 years in prison

Cevat Yurdagül was released after 32 years and three postponed release decisions. He said that many prisoners are kept behind bars arbitrarily even after completing their sentences.

Cevat Yurdagül was held in the Bolvadin T-Type Prison in Afyon. He was released on Friday after 32 years of imprisonment. He was welcomed outside the prison by members of the Eskişehir Provincial Organization of the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), representatives from the Ankara office of the Federation of Legal and Solidarity Associations for Families of Prisoners and Convicts (MED TUHAD-FED), and many of his relatives.

Cevat Yurdagül said that spending 32 years in prison is not something he sees as a personal issue, but rather as part of a much larger question. He said: "If there is a fire in the house, everyone will be affected in some way, and this is what happened to us. I wish that, instead of producing pain, this land had given rise to beauty. But up until now, certain factors have prevented that, and peace has never been realized in this region. Our hope is that peace will finally be established. Perhaps the only thing that has not yet been tried in this land is peace. A process has been initiated; no one knows how it will end, but it gives hope."

Our friends must be released

Cevat Yurdagül addressed the situation of other prisoners, stating: "There are still people in prison who should not be there. Although their sentences have ended, they remain inside due to the arbitrary decisions of prison boards. We hope these friends will soon reunite with their families and reintegrate into society. I sincerely hope they will soon regain their freedom. For me, reconnecting with society, smelling the earth and flowers, and watching the birds in flight are all deeply emotional experiences."

Previously held in prisons in Antep (Dîlok), Çankırı, and Karabük, Yurdagül spent the past five years in the Bolvadin T-Type Prison. His release was postponed three times by the Administrative and Observation Board because he refused to express “regret.”

Yurdagül set off toward the Dörtyol district of Hatay.
